Physician James Edwin Guthrie operated a pharmacy with Shadrach Guthrie during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Salado, Texas. In 1930, he wrote about the history of Salado College. In 1859, the Salado Joint Stock Company founded Salado College in Salado, Texas. The next year, the college opened with seventy-five enrolled students.
